Kybella is a prescription injectable treatment used to improve the appearance of moderate to severe fullness beneath the chin, often called submental fullness, in appropriate adult candidates.
At Vitalé in Manasquan, Kybella treatment begins with a provider-led consultation. Your provider will assess your anatomy, skin quality, medical history, treatment goals, and possible causes of fullness beneath the chin before deciding whether Kybella or another option may be appropriate.
Kybella is FDA-approved for submental fullness in adults. It is not recommended for treating fat outside the area beneath the chin. A consultation does not guarantee treatment. Results vary.
What is Kybella®?
Kybella is an injectable treatment containing synthetic deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a substance that helps break down dietary fat in the body.
When injected into the submental fat beneath the chin by a trained provider, Kybella destroys targeted fat cells in the treated area. The body gradually clears the treated cells over time.
Kybella is intended for selected adults with moderate to severe fullness beneath the chin. It is not a weight-loss treatment, skin-tightening treatment, or replacement for surgery.
How Does It Work?
Kybella works by physically disrupting targeted fat cells in the treated submental area. Because the treatment affects tissue in the injection area, careful placement and dosing are important.
Your provider will mark the treatment area and use a planned injection pattern. The number of injections and sessions depends on your anatomy, amount of submental fullness, treatment goals, and response.
Some patients need more than one treatment session. The FDA label allows up to six single treatments, spaced at least one month apart.
Am I a Candidate for Kybella?
You may be a candidate for Kybella if you are an adult with moderate to severe fullness beneath the chin and your provider determines that the fullness is related to submental fat.
Kybella may not be appropriate if your fullness is mainly caused by loose skin, prominent neck bands, enlarged glands, lymph nodes, anatomy changes, or another medical issue.
Kybella should not be used if there is an infection at the injection site. Your provider will also review your medical history, prior neck or facial procedures, bleeding risk, medications, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, and any history of swallowing difficulty before making a recommendation.
The Consultation
During your Kybella consultation at Vitalé, your provider will review your goals, medical history, medications, allergies, prior cosmetic treatments, and concerns about fullness beneath the chin.
Your provider will assess your chin, jawline, neck anatomy, skin laxity, and treatment area to determine whether Kybella is appropriate.
Your provider will explain:
- Whether Kybella is suitable for your anatomy
- How many sessions may be needed
- What results may realistically be expected
- Common and serious risks
- Downtime and aftercare
- Alternatives such as other nonsurgical options or surgical consultation
The goal is to determine whether Kybella is a safe and appropriate option for you, not to recommend treatment automatically.
