Dysport

Dysport is a prescription injection containing abobotulinumtoxinA, a type of botulinum toxin used to temporarily relax targeted muscles.

For cosmetic treatment, Dysport is FDA-approved to improve the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar lines, which are the frown lines between the eyebrows, in adults under 65.

Providers may also discuss off-label cosmetic uses when clinically appropriate, including selected forehead lines, crow’s feet, lip flip, or gummy smile concerns. Off-label use means the treatment may be commonly performed by trained injectors but is not specifically FDA-approved for that particular cosmetic area.

Your provider will explain which areas are being treated, whether the use is FDA-approved or off-label, and what risks and alternatives should be considered.

In some patients, Dysport may be used off-label to reduce the appearance of a gummy smile by relaxing selected muscles above the upper lip.

This treatment is not appropriate for everyone. Your provider will assess your smile pattern, lip movement, facial anatomy, and goals before deciding whether Dysport is suitable.

Some patients begin to notice changes within a few days, with full effect typically developing within 1 to 2 weeks. Results vary and are temporary. Repeat treatment may be needed to maintain the effect.

Dysport works by blocking the nerve signals that cause muscle contractions. When injected into specific facial muscles, it temporarily paralyzes them. This muscle relaxation results in the smoothing away of wrinkles and fine lines, creating a more youthful and refreshed appearance. Dysport’s effects typically last for several months.

The Dysport injection procedure is relatively quick, typically taking about 10 to 30 minutes. The treatment area will be cleansed to get rid of impurities and dirt. A topical numbing cream may be applied for your optimal comfort. Using a fine needle, the Dysport solution is injected into the targeted muscles.

Ideal candidates for Dysport are generally healthy individuals who are bothered by the appearance of facial wrinkles and lines. While there is no specific age requirement, candidates are typically over the age of 18.

It’s important to note that you should not have allergic reactions to Botox and other botulinum toxin products. If you have neuromuscular conditions, you may be recommended for other treatments. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should not have the Dysport procedure.

Most patients return to normal daily activities after Dysport treatment, but your provider will give you specific aftercare instructions.

Temporary side effects may include redness, swelling, tenderness, bruising, headache, or mild discomfort at the injection sites. Other possible side effects include eyelid drooping, brow heaviness, asymmetry, dry eye, muscle weakness, or an unwanted change in facial expression.

Rare but serious risks can occur if the toxin effect spreads beyond the injection area. Seek medical help right away if you develop trouble swallowing, speaking, or breathing, or if you experience widespread muscle weakness or vision changes.
